Histopathology & Cytopathlogy
Histopathology is the study of the microscopic human anatomy whereas cytopathology is the microscopic study of cell samples. Histopathology helps doctors analyze naturally occurring cells and compare them to diseased or abnormal cell types to determine the nature and cause of the disease. The abnormalities could include excessive growth, inflammation, infection or cancerous growth. Samples received by the pathology laboratory require tissue preparation are treated and analyzed using techniques apt for the tissue type and the investigation being performed.
For a cytopathology test, samples are obtained using a special needle. This sampled fluid or tissue from a patient is smeared onto a slide and is examined under the microscope by the anatomical pathologist. By observing the number of cells, types of cells, grouping, and the cell details, an expert can determine if there is an abnormality or disease and how it can be treated.
